?Skateboarding = Bad?
In a society where skateboarding is unheard of, whenever the word skateboarding
is mentioned, most people will right away have an image of teenage juvenile
delinquents illegally breaking the law or spray-painting the walls with
graffiti while the rest of them pulling skateboarding tricks in a dark alley
with deafening music rocking through the entire neighbourhood.
Okay, I admit that was over exaggerating a little but for those who are
convinced about skateboarding is equivalent to bad influences, the picture I
painted isn’t too far off from what they think. This is very much because of the fact that
skateboarding gained its popularity just the way punk music did and has always
captivated the heart of those hardcore, aggressive, slick and cool
anti-individuals.
But on the contrary, skateboarding is only as bad influence as you allow it to
be. The conception about skateboarding is a bad influence turning innocent
children into drug abusers or lawbreakers is completely untrue and unfounded.
In reality, this unique sport encompasses many admirable professional
skateboarders who are excellent role models for many people around the world
regardless of age to look up to. A fine example is Tony Hawk, who has invented
many aerial skateboard tricks, is a dedicated family man and has contributed
plenty of money to charity. In his autobiography, he described his life was
changed through skateboarding from a frustrated, unfocused and rage prone kid
to now as a household name. Another person is Rodney Mullen who is not just
friendly and humble but also a holder of a Masters Degree. Using his position,
Bob Burnquist has also helped the environment and inspired many people
worldwide when he overcame his asthma to skateboard. Even figure like Jereme
Rogers who fits the image of skateboarder gone astray with his shaved head,
tattoos and language is a man of religion who always speaks of his belief in
God granted him of his talent and skill.
With such honourable individuals as leading example, how could parents object
to their children learning skateboarding?
Yes, it’s true there are many other skaters out there whom are not good influence, but
let us not judge an entire orchard just because of a few rotten apples. To be
fair, even athletes, geeks, cheerleaders, conservative‘nice’little kids or even church-going individuals could very well led people gone
astray and down the wrong path. The major cause why skaters get a bad rap,
particularly those who hold strongly to the punk culture style, is because of
their appearance and their tough-as-nail character that lean toward
anti-establishment.
If you still worry about your children mixing with the wrong crowd, then there
are other alternative places that provide a secure and safe environment for
them to pick up skateboarding with comfort of mind. Many churches, associations
and organizations have their own skateboarding clubs as well as events for
skateboarders to partake in. Whatever the case maybe, always stick with people
you’re familiar with and avoid those who are known to less law-abiding individuals.
With a little rationale, a lot of untoward incidence can be prevented
altogether. After all, skateboarding is all about having fun, and not
law-breaking. As parents, you should give your children a little break, and
believe in them that they know what’s best and what’s not. Seeing them happily enjoying skateboarding is a wonderful experience and
who knows, you might even be tempted to try skateboarding yourself!
Robber rode skateboard to banks

Mexico police: Robber rode on a skateboard to banks
MEXICO CITY — Mexico City police say they have arrested a would-be bandit who rode his skateboard to bank robbery attempts.
Police say Sergio Ledesma and his skateboard have been turned over to prosecutors after he allegedly attempted to rob two banks by whispering threats to tellers.
Police say the teller at the first bank simply acted as if he hadn’t heard Ledesma, who then skated off to a second bank.
The second teller told police Ledesma appeared to whisper a threat. So the teller set off a silent alarm, and counted out the money while the would-be robber waited patiently.
Police said Friday Ledesma was still waiting when they arrived and arrested him.
Illinois man didn’t know he’d shot a nail into his brain
ORLAND PARK, Ill. — A suburban Chicago man thought the errant nail that discharged from the gun he was working with had whizzed by his head. Instead, it was lodged in his brain.
Family members say Dante Autullo spent more than a day with the 3-1/2-inch nail in his head before having it removed Thursday.
The 32-year-old was tinkering in the garage of his Orland Park home Tuesday when the nail gun went off. He saw a small wound but couldn’t find the nail and didn’t think much of it.
He went to work the next day but later went to the hospital with nausea and one monster of a headache.
That’s when an X-ray uncovered the nail.
Autullo is recovering after a four-hour surgery to have the nail removed.

Skateboard park paused but ready for approval, official says
Don’t lose hope, said Tim Raimer: The skateboard park still has
wheels.
“We have it designed and have all kinds of ideas. It’s not lost,”
said Raimer, the parks, recreation and forestry manager for the
city of Portage.
Money was set aside to get a concrete pad at Goodyear Park, he
said, but installation is on hold.
A splash pad is to be built in the same park and has received more
attention with fundraising and the support of the area service
organizations.
The skateboard park, much of which could be funded by a large
financial donation bequeathed to the city, is listed as a project
in the 2011 city capital improvements.
There are two companies ready to start building the park, he said,
but Raimer needs the approval of the Common Council.
“We’ve got all the plans. It’s just a matter of them saying, ‘Let’s
do it,’” he said.
City Administrator Larry Plaster said the timing and fundraising of
the splash pad will affect the thrust of the skateboard park.
“Nobody said it won’t happen, but I think there’s still some
missing pieces of the puzzle,” he said.
Mayor Ken Jahn said he asked that all department heads to go
through their capital projects records from the last three years to
find out how much money was budgeted, how much was used and what
did or didn’t get done.
“They’re all still on the lists of things to be done,” Jahn
said.
Raimer was asked to set a goal date for the park and work
backward.
“We have to follow state laws, so to make sure we meet all these
deadlines (there’s) the importance of developing time lines is so
we don’t miss public posting and dates,” Jahn said.
Raimer said he’d like to get the park “moving along” and set the
concrete pad down and add units to it. He said he has recently
received calls from people wondering about its status.
“Don’t lose hope. The splash pad came along and slowed the skate
park down,” he said.
The skateboard park will be a topic for the Park and Rec Board
during its Feb. 8 meeting.

A Fan's Take on the Skate Video Little Skateboard Action With…
On January 20, 2012, a short and sweet skate video was released entitled A Little Skateboard Action With. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. It will make you want to find an empty pool or bowl and go skate. Here are a few more details about the video and the skaters who appeared in it:
About the Skate Video
The A Little Skateboard Action With… video was filmed by Cody Green and was released by Street Canoe. It stars Riley Stevens, Robbie Russo, Elijah Berle and Ronnie Sandoval rocking a series of bowls. Of course there were a lot of awesome aerials and sick transitions dished out by all the skaters involved. The film was shot at Channel Street and various other locations across Malibu, California. Elijah Berle was on fire when it came to destroying the coping. So was Riley Stevens. Sandoval also unleashed a wicked handplant.
Riley Stevens
Riley Stevens is a regular footed skater who has spent time living in both Arizona and California. His frontside airs and backtails are usually dead on. Stevens has been skating competitively on and off since the early 2000s. In 2011 he participated in the CONS Coastal Carnage and made it as far as 21st place in the Qualifiers.
Robbie Russo
Stevens’ cohort Robbie Russo is a regular footed, amateur skater who hails from San Pedro, California. Don’t let the fact that he is still on amateur status fool you into thinking he doesn’t have the skills to pay the bills. Russo is able to bust out a lien melon over the hip as good as any pro can. His backside stalefish is sublime as well. Russo’s career highlights include a 7th place win at the 2011 CONS Coastal Carnage.
Elijah Berle
Elijah Berle is a goofy footed am from California. He has been skating competitively since the early 2000s and his career highlights include a 1st place win at the 2010 Tampa Am. In 2011 he participated in the Maloof Money Cup’s DC stop as well as the Tampa Am and the Phoenix Am with mixed results. He only made it to the qualifiers at the Tampa Am and in DC. He did a bit better in Phoenix. While there he made it to 21st place in the Semi-Finals. Berle receives sponsorship support from Spitfire Wheels, Independent Trucks, Chocolate Skateboards and others.
Ronnie Sandoval
And last but certainly not least is Ronnie Sandoval. He has been ripping it up righteously since he was 13 years old. In 2011 he took 2nd in the Men’s Division at the Annual Chili Bowl in San Francisco and delivered a pretty mean slob air at the Day of the Dead Shred.

Joe Flacco Ratted Out To Ravens For Riding Skateboard

There is an informant in our midst, said Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. One of his neighbors saw Flacco on a skateboard and didn’t hesitate to call the Baltimore Ravens and let them know.
The Ravens star quarterback had this to say to NFL Total Access,
“I’d never been on a skateboard in my life, so I was literally riding it about 10 feet down my driveway just to see if I could stand on it and stay upright. One of my neighbors must have called in looking for [general manager] Ozzie Newsome and left a voicemail on his secretary’s phone saying, ‘Hey, man, you got to let Joe Flacco know we’re trying to win the Super Bowl around here! He’s at home riding a skateboard. Somebody’s got to let him know what the deal is.’”
Joe Flacco has the game of his professional life coming up as he attempts to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship game and a trip to the Super Bowl.
The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best ranked Defenses in the NFL and the New England Patriots is one of the best ranked offenses. Joe Flacco led the Ravens to the AFC Championship game even though he was basically a rookie when it comes to playoff football.
An interesting question to ask is since when does a 27 year old try to ride a skateboard even when he doesn’t have the biggest game of his life to worry about?

Skateboard Shaped Coffin on Display in the UK
Are you deadly serious about skateboarding? I mean to the point where everything you have ever owned has been skate related. If that sounds like you, you may want to give the folks at Crazy Coffin a ring. Here’s why:
Skateboard Shaped Coffins
Crazy Coffins is located in the UK and it manufactures some of the funkiest looking coffins around. One of them is shaped like a skateboard, wheels and all. In my opinion, the wheels aren’t the most amusing part. It’s the skate deck. It has the words Urban Decay scrawled across it along with a few other graphic design elements. Talk about your sardonic send offs! To my knowledge, it is the only company in the world that makes skateboard shaped coffins. I actually stumbled across photos of the company’s skateboard coffin while reading about an event going on in the UK from January 20th through the 29th, 2012. The event is entitled Death: Southbank Centre’s Festival for the Living.
The festival is a three day event entirely devoted to exploring death and how people deal with it. Crazy Coffins is an exhibitor at the event and the skateboard coffin is part of the exhibit. It isn’t the only odd coffin either. You can also choose to be buried in coffins shaped like a corkscrew, a can of Red Bull, an electric guitar, a cell phone or a sports bag. Basically, you name it and the company’s craftsman will build it for you. A word of warning though, hearing the price tag could send you rolling over the edge much sooner than you had originally planned. Custom coffins tend to cost $5,000 or more depending on the size and shape.
Coffin Shaped Skateboards
If a coffin shaped like a skateboard is a bit much for you, you may want to start small and buy a skateboard shaped like a coffin. You can find that right here in America through the skateboard company known as Corpse Corps Boards. The price of a coffin shaped skateboard is also likely to cause less heart palpitations when you hear the price. Depending on the size, a coffin shaped skateboard will set you back anywhere from $55 to $88 each. You can get them in 9 inch or 10 inch widths with hand painted artwork on each coffin shaped deck.
