Pure Board Shop Extends Board Wall and Gives Different Brands a Try

Every Winter season Pure Board Shop‘s skateboard deck wall shrinks to make room for snowboard product which takes up a lot of floor space. But now with the snowboard product away and warm weather Pure Board Shop’s board wall is back to it’s full size and is stocked with a couple different brands.

Annapolis, Maryland (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

As people grow and trends change, people’s tastes changes. This is especially true in skateboarding. Taking this into account when extending their skateboard deck wall, Pure Board Shop has brought in a couple different brands.

“It seem’s that the skateboarding community in Annapolis is at a point where people are developing their own tastes and not everybody wants the same thing.” observes Josh Menocal, manager at Pure Board Shop.

According to Josh, a couple of years ago it was clear which skateboard deck brands were in the highest demand and doing the best. “Back in 2008 Zoo York and DGK were our best selling deck brands, last summer it was probably Anti Hero, Creature, and Real” Josh recalls. This was clear to Josh and the staff at Pure Board Shop over the summer but through Fall and Winter they could see now real front runners for deck companies.

One thing that might be contributing to this lack of a dominating brand is the state of skateboarding. Right now skateboarding is in a place where there is no uniform for skateboarders. Just by flipping through a skate magazine you can see that there are so many different types of skaters right now. Josh suggests that, “kids take a look at these magazines and must feel like they can dress however they want, listen to whatever music they want, and buy any deck they want and still fit in with other skaters and within skateboarding it self.”

Because of all the different types of skaters within skateboarding and around Annapolis, Pure Board Shop has made sure to stock decks from many different companies. This meant getting decks from companies that they haven’t carried in a while or haven’t done that well in the past. Pure is now stocking more boards from Zoo York, which did well back in ’08, but hasn’t been a best seller as of late. Pure Board Shop has also brought in brands like Toy Machine and Krooked, companies that have always been concerned with doing their own thing.

“I never understood why Krooked skateboards has done better around here, Krooked sponsors Bobby Worrest riding for them and he is basically a local boy, I mean Bobby use to ride for Rob’s (the owner of Pure Board Shop) old shop, Evolve. So I never understood why kids wouldn’t be excited about that and want to support a local guy who made it.”

Regardless of what kind of skater you are, whether you are still supporting Zoo York or DGK, or if you are into skating on a Anti Hero or Creature deck. No matter if you’re into hip-hop or punk rock, it’s appears Pure Board Shop has decks to support all skaters.

MODA goes Darwin on the 'Evolution of Skateboard Art'

This summer, the Museum of Design Atlanta will exhibit Skate It or Hang It!? The Evolution of Skateboard Art, featuring skateboard art dating from the 1970s to today. The scope of the exhibition is multifaceted: nearly 200 decks, original work by folks like Michael Sieben and Lance Mountain, installations from locals Alex Brewer (Hense) and Charlie Owens, plenty of skateboarding events, and so on. The video above is hyping the exhibition for now, but we’ll have more coverage as it nears time to the opening on June 16.

Review: GorillaPod with Wheels Offers Smooth Rolling — Until You're Outdoors

Image: Cinetics

Put some skateboard wheels on a GorillaPod, and you have CineSkates. Clever, right?

When the device debuted on Kickstarter with a $20,000 fundraising goal last summer, photographers clamored to get one of their own, helping the Cinetics team raise a whopping $486,518.

Today, CineSkates is a full-fledged product that can be found online and in brick-and-motors such as BH and Adorama. Using the top of the line GorillaPod Focus with ballhead, CineSkates retails for $285. The wheels, which can be purchased by themselves for $170, promise fluid rolling, perfect for pans. Furthermore, markers on the wheels give filmmakers the flexibility to create motion in timelapse movies.

Three hundred dollars might seem steep for such a DIY idea, but on a retail level, the GorillaPod Focus with ballhead alone make up half the costs. The wheels are made of two detachable parts: the roller itself and a cup that the tripod legs rest on. When properly fastened, these sturdy wheels hold on.

Image: Cinetics

While certainly a smart idea, CineSkates has its drawbacks. In perfect conditions, this tripod dolly can achieve smooth pans without issue. But perfect conditions entail a low-friction surface, such as a table or hardwood floors. When you bring this outdoors, its performance diminishes. Skateboarders can attest that the surface makes a world of difference on the riding experience. It’s no different with the CineSkates.

I found the most difficulty when I was trying to shoot along a ledge. First, even though the surface was paved, its imperfections added a fair amount of shake to the video, which meant post-processing work in an editing environment (not fun). Furthermore, because the tripod legs now rested on wheels, the weight of a full-frame camera contributed to the legs spreading apart. Ordinarily, the GorillaPod Focus, rated for 11 pounds, has no problem supporting a Canon 5D Mark II. When shooting a timelapse, the slightest of changes in the planned course and direction means having to scrap your filming and start from the beginning again.

My shooting environment led to another issue. I found a great curved ledge that I thought would make for dramatic motion. It measured about a foot and a half wide, so the goal here was to choreograph the CineSkates in such a way that the wheels would travel this perfect arc. Sadly, despite spending about 45 minutes configuring the CineSkates, I was never able to achieve the shot. In addition to the flaws already mentioned — the slight imperfections of the pavement leading to camera shake and the CineSkate’s inability to fully support the weight of my SLR — it is extraordinarily difficult to angle the wheels in such a way that it travels perfectly along this ledge. It often would veer off path, partially because of the tripod legs widening but also because of the GorillaPod’s design.

Generally, I’ve been a big fan of Joby’s GorillaPod lineup. The flexible design allows shooters to get steady shots in ordinarily difficult situations. (Not to mention, the best tripod isn’t necessarily the heaviest one you own; it’s the one you’d bring everywhere.) However, with CineSkates, such flexibility made following a set path difficult. If you need precision, it can be hard to angle and adjust the wheels for that perfect shot.

Depending on your use, CineSkates might be a great fit. (Case in point: footage for the promotional Kickstarter video looks amazing.) But the conditions need to be ideal. For me, though, the limitations make this an impractical purchase.

Lake Havasu Todays News Herald

Local teen Amanda James landed a $600 Disney Friends for Change grant and organized a “Safe My Ride” event Sunday at London Bridge Beach Park to promote skateboard and scooter safety in Lake Havasu City.

“I couldn’t sleep one night,” said 16-year-old James, “And I turned on the Disney Channel and saw this grant program to make a difference, and I thought ‘I need to make a difference’.”

James said she chose skateboard and scooter safety based on Havasu’s lack of sidewalks, her best friend’s love of the sport, and the new city ordinance implemented in 2011.

The ordinance allows skateboard and scooter riders under 16 years of age to ride on some city roadways. While doing so, all must wear a protective helmet, a headlamp from dusk to dawn and reflectors; ride along the roadway’s right edge; obey all rules of traffic; and yield the right-of-way when approaching sidewalks, bike paths, and other crossings, according to Lake Havasu City Ordinance No. 11-1063.

As the vice-president of the Lake Havasu High School Bigs Club, which is a facet of Interagency Council’s Big Brother Big Sisters program, James took the idea to the group.

“I was up night and day, and night and day trying to complete the application, it was really crazy,” James said. She learned the end of March the proposal had been accepted by Disney.

Vendors included River Medical ambulance service, Havasu Regional Medical Center, Utility Board Shop, Lake Havasu City Police Department, and Lake Havasu City Fire Department.

At least 50 skateboard and scooter enthusiasts of all ages swamped the event from noon to 3 p.m. The participants made their way from vendor booth to vendor booth to learn of the different aspects of skating safety. A vendors stamp from each booth made participants eligible for a drawing to win a new skateboard deck and helmet.

During the event, Lake Havasu City Mayor Mark Nexsen presented James with a proclamation marking May 6, 2012 as “Safe My Ride” Day in Lake Havasu City.

Lake Havasu City police officer Josh Sondrol said he was handing off copies of the city’s skateboarding ordinance from the department’s vendor space.

Lake Havasu City firefighter/engineer Kevin Shuck displayed his protective fire gear and photographs of professional and amateur sports-type crashes – some wearing protective gear, and some were not.

“We all work as a team,” Shuck said of the event vendors. “And I’m telling (the riders) the fire department will probably get there first. The ambulance is going to give you a ride to the hospital and the police are going to investigate the accident.”

Shuck also tied in his gear by explaining he needs the proper protective gear to stay safe, just as riders need their protective gear also to stay safe, he said.

Bulldog carves up the sidewalk on skateboard

INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV/CNN) – One bulldog is turning heads in Indianapolis.

He can skateboard better than many humans can.

Erick Yorkman has three bulldogs but only Max can wow a crowd.

Yorkman bought Max a small skateboard when he was about 10 weeks old.

Since then, the three-year-old dog has learned to shift his weight to guide the board from side to side and he can ride it down stairs.

Yorkman says Max enjoys rolling down the street, and so far, no broken doggie bones.

Event aims to keep Weston Skateboard Park safe

WESTON — A group of bicyclists is trying to make the Skateboard Park in Weston a better place for skateboard athletes.

Eye Bike for Kids, a family bicycling event slated for May 19, will raise money for improvements to the skate park. John Nowaczyk, owner of Sprocketz Bike Shop in Weston, is organizing the ride with Dr. C. Douglas Stine, owner of Stine Eye Center in Weston.

Stine said the event combines two things he’s passionate about: bicycling, and ensuring the skate park is a great place for youths.

“I’ve decided to adopt the skate park as my mission, and a bike event seems like the perfect way to raise money for the park while having a great family event for the community,” Stine said.

The 8,000-square-foot skate park at Kennedy Park, 6002 Alderson St., Weston, was built in 2008 by Dreamland Parks, one of the most popular skate park designers in the country. Nowaczyk said the skate park is an important resource for families.

“There is a cry out in the community for a safe place for kids to go. The skate park is a great place that kids love, and our goal is to make it nice and keep it nice so parents feel comfortable sending their kids there,” Nowaczyk said.

Stine said he began visiting the park with his 10-year-old son, David, about three years ago and was troubled by the debris inside the park that could make skateboarding dangerous.

“I started using a backpack leaf blower to get the rocks out of the park,” Stine said. “I was there watching my son anyway, so it made sense. Now I’d like to take it a step further.”

Stine said the money raised at the Eye Bike event will be used for future improvements to the park, including planting grass outside the fence to stop rocks from blowing into the skate park.

Nowaczyk said a bike ride supporting the skate park makes sense because the park also is used by bicyclists.

“BMX cyclists use the park, too,” Nowaczyk said. “The kids love it. We’re just trying to make it better.”

Stine said his plans for a bike event have been in the works for decades.

“Years ago, I had the idea of hosting a communitywide bike ride, and this year the right things came together to bring my vision to life,” he said. “Families today need to get outside and have fun being active together. That’s what this ride is all about.”
