(MENAFN – Arab Times) Seth Levy, a US skateboard instructor, firmly believed that Kuwait could have a lot of potential to become a tourist destination that would attract international and professional skaters.

Levy described his first visit to Kuwait as “an exploratory mission.” He came to the Gulf country with little expectations but discovered a small active skateboarding community between the ages of (13 to 20 years old) who skated several times a week.

Those kids “have a natural talent to become professional skateboarders. They only need guidance and places to ride,” said Levy in a cozy sit down with Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) here Wednesday.

“If they were given the right circumstances, those kids could become world-class professionals,” Levy emphasized. He went on saying that in order to achieve that proper concrete skate-parks should be set up in the country to provide venues where skaters could progress and grow to much higher levels in the sport.

The enthusiastic 24-year-old Levy, also a skate-park designer and a former professional skateboarder, has been in an endeavor to develop the skateboarding culture in countries that lack the landscape for such extreme sport; hence his focus on the Middle East region.

Levy did not only visit Kuwait in 2011 but he also made other trips to Bahrain, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia to spread the word about skateboarding.
As part of his long-term vision for skateboarding here, Levy said that he would like to bring competition to Kuwait by having a world cup for skateboarding.

Skaters from around the world would come to compete not only with professionals but also with the local kids. A competition of such caliper would definitely encourage the kids here to perform better, said Levy.
He explained that through his endeavor to spread the culture of skateboarding, he created his “Step Up” program to develop this sport within the country. He noted that the program involved three steps: the first step to set a good distribution strategy where local retailers are encouraged to sell skateboarding parts at lower prices to make them affordable for everyone. The second step would be to work with private entities or with the government to provide good places for skateboarders to ride. Thirdly, holding public demonstration to show people what skateboarding is like.

This time around, Levy did not come alone. He brought two of his fellow skateboarders, Lizzie Armanto, currently the number one ranked female skater in the United States and Ben Hatchell, one of skateboarding’s most popular young skaters.

Aramanto, 19, and Hatchell, 22, came out here to help Levy to spread the word about skateboarding, share their experiences and talk about what this sport gave for them.

On Thursday, May 17, the three will conduct a skateboarding clinic and exhibition at the Marina Waves Skateboard Park, which is open to the public. On Friday, May 18, there will be a competition for local skaters at the Marina Waves Skateboard Park.

The US Embassy, along with its partner Extreme Sports, is sponsoring Levy’s visit.

Nathan Strube, a Mendenhall Middle School student killed last week when he struck a pickup while riding a skateboard, will be remembered Saturday at a celebration-of-life service.

The 5 p.m. event is open to everyone and will be at Sunset Park, 1055 Geneva St. Those attending are asked to bring blankets or lawn chairs and finger foods to share.

“Nate loved the outdoors, so we’re having it at a park,” said his father, Sam Strube, an assistant principal at Williams Middle School in Tracy. “He loved his friends and family, so they will all be there. He loved to eat, so there will be food. And he loved music, so we’ll be playing music from his iPod.”

On May 8, Nathan Strube, 13, was riding his longboard downhill from Kara Place when he turned onto Lomitas Avenue and collided with the side of a pickup pulling a landscaping trailer. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

“All indications are showing that the driver was not at fault,” said Livermore police Sgt. John Hurd.

“The poor guy was just working and doing his job and driving to another job site,” Sam Strube said of the driver. “It’s just a terrible thing, and it wasn’t his fault.”

Nathan was very close to his brother, Calvin, 10, and to his mother, Katie Strube, a teacher at Rancho Las Positas Elementary in Livermore, he said.

Sam Strube said his wife has been devastated by the loss. Calvin’s friends have been a consistent presence and have been keeping

him busy, Sam Strube said.

“Calvin told me he wanted to wish his mother ‘Happy Mother’s Day,’ but it wasn’t happy. He told his mom he loved her, and that was the perfect gift,” Sam Strube said.

Students at Mendenhall Middle School have been writing the characteristics that best described Nathan on cards. The family plans to give an award to a student who best exemplifies those characteristics. They haven’t decided what the award will be, but they’re thinking a scholarship might be the answer.

Nathan Strube was often seen riding his skateboard or bicycle around Livermore, and he liked to stop and talk to neighbors, Sam Strube said.

“People come up and tell us stories about Nate,” he said. “That’s the best thing. It’s comforting to know that people care.”

He described Nathan as a thoughtful and conscientious child who was mechanically inclined and who was a voracious reader of science fiction books, such as “Dragon Rider” and “The Hunger Games.”

“At 8, he could take apart a lawn mower engine and put it back together and it would work,” Sam Strube said.

The father and son spent countless hours in their garage working on the shell of a 1967 Chevrolet Nova. They were thinking about getting it running so they could sell it, but Sam Strube said he now hopes to fix it up and keep it in memory of his son.

“He was an awesome kid,” he said. “He was always a great companion, ever since he was little.”

New inductees have been recently added to the BMX and Skateboarding Hall of Fames.

In skateboarding, on May 10, during the IASC Skateboarding Summit in Anaheim, Calif., four new names were added to Skateboarding Hall of Fame. They were Danny Bearer, the 1964 National Championships winner; Jay Adams, an original Z-Boy; Peggy Oki, the lone female Z-Boy; and skate pioneer Mark Gonzales.

Four others received Icon Awards: John Humphrey, who was the first licensee of a skateboard patent; Frank Nasworthy, who helped introduce skateboarding’s first polyurethane wheels; photographer Glen E. Friedman; and California punk rock legends Black Flag.

In the world of BMX, the 2012 National BMX Hall Of Fame induction ceremony will take place June 16, under the Olympic Flame at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. There will be a new category honoring the women who have contributed to BMX over the years. They will also pay tribute to the first USA Olympic BMX Team by inducting all four of its members — Mike Day, Donny Robinson, Kyle Bennett and Jill Kintner — as special honorees.

Five other new names will be added to the BMX Hall of Fame. They are pioneer BMX racer John Palfreyman, Jr.; BMX racer Eric Carter; BMX Freestyler Mat Hoffman; Torker Factory Team’s Steve Johnson; and photographer Windy Osborn.

Toronto police have charged a taxi driver with second-degree murder following a collision that killed a man on a skateboard Monday night.

The victim, 28-year-old Ralph Bissonnette, was struck by a taxi on King St. just east of Jarvis St. around 6 p.m. while riding a skateboard west on King St.

Toronto police spokesman Tony Vella said homicide investigators spoke with a number of witnesses and have since laid the charge against 43-year-old Adib Ibrahim.

“It’s alleged the cab driver… intentionally made contact with the victim,” said Vella.

Police have also reviewed video that captured part of the incident. They are urging other witnesses to come forward.

Shortly after the accident, witnesses described a horrific scene.

“It was terrible,” said pedestrian Filip Dujic, who passed the scene only a few moments after the collision. “It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”

An Emergency Medical Services team arrived minutes later, where they found the skateboarder lying against the curb with head injuries. The team rushed him to hospital where he died.

Police cordoned off part of the street with yellow tape and spent more than four hours reconstructing the crash.

As officers worked, the silver Toyota hybrid taxi remained along the street with a lone skateboard leaning on the curb in front of a rug store.

The collision tore off the longboard skateboard’s rear wheels, which ended up a few feet away near a storm sewer. Blood stained the curb. A backpack lay near the sidewalk.

Ibrahim is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

The Bachelorette‘s new season with Emily Maynard started last night, and right off the bat, we met some strange characters. Some came in with eggs, others dressed as grandma, and the most impressive best way to put a target on your back, was a helicopter. Believe it or not though, Emily Maynard was actually more impressed with the skateboard entrance than the helicopter. Read on for more of Emily’s thoughts on the first night!

The Bachelorette kicked off the brand new season last night, and the most extravagant entrance was by Kalon, deemed the “helicopter guy” by the other men, but despite his entrance, Emily Maynard was more impressed with someone else’s entrance. “As extravagant as the helicopter was, Jef showing up on the skateboard was way more impressive in my mind! I immediately loved that he wasn’t trying to impress me with some over the top entrance, but was clearly confident enough in himself that he didn’t need all of that extra stuff,” Emily recently dished to People Magazine. Now, keep in mind that Jef is one of the guys rumored to have made it to the final two at this point, but we’ll have to wait it out and see if that rings true.

Though she was not super impressed with the helicopter entrance, Emily admitted that when it landed, she felt some relief. Why, you may ask? Emily explained: “As the helicopter was landing a million thoughts were going through my mind. I remember standing there confused, not knowing what to expect, but I also knew whoever stepped out was obviously trying to make a huge impression … I was extremely nervous that it was Brad or possibly Bentley! I was relieved to see a fresh face.” Ha! could you imagine poor Emily Maynard if one of those two had gotten out of the helicopter? She was already so nervous, that she would have likely passed out!

DESLOGE – A Desloge teenager appeared before the city’s board of aldermen at its monthly meeting Monday to ask where he can skateboard in town without being hassled by the police or run off by business owners.

Andrew Clark, 18, addressed board members during the public comment portion of the meeting. He described his frustrated attempts to find a place in town where he can enjoy riding his skateboard without getting in trouble.

The board, sympathizing with the young man’s situation, asked if there was any place in town where skateboarding is allowed. He said there was an indoor skate park at the corner of Monroe and Cedar streets, but that the facility is only open to skateboarding teams.

Alderman Alvin Sutton asked Clark if he had tried the skateboard park in Farmington.

“Yes, but there’s too many people there and too many fights,” said Clark.

Sutton agreed that the Farmington skate park was overrun with people and would likely be a difficult place to enjoy skateboarding.

City Administrator Greg Camp suggested Clark use Cantwell Trail behind the middle school as it is specifically set aside for use by pedestrians and those using non-motorized modes of transportation, such as bicycles and skateboards. Clark countered that the trail is too straight and that he prefers using the city park, but the police ask him to leave whenever he does so.

Board members explained that the police are only doing their job and that their primary concern was not that Clark would cause property damage with his skateboard, but that he might injure himself and leave the city liable if he “banged his head or broke an arm.” The board went on to explain that the city has no control over the use of private property. They told Clark that if a business owner doesn’t want him skateboarding on their property, they have the right to ask him to leave or call the police to have him removed.

Camp told board members that in the late ’90s the city had considered setting an area aside for the use of skateboarders, but ended up not pursuing the idea. Mayor David Kater thanked Clark for appearing before the board and promised they would consider his comments about the need to provide a sanctioned location in town for skateboard use.

In other action by the board:

• The date of Monday, June 4 was set aside for the board to hold a work session on next year’s city budget.
