Music plays a big part in skating. Whether your listening to an iPod when you’re skating by yourself or the music that’s played while you’re watching a skate video. Either way without music skating is only half of what it is. Because just like music, skating is somewhat of an art and when the two are together skating becomes much more fun and enjoyable. However, most peoples moods become affected when they listen to certain types of music, therefore there are some genres that should be avoided. When you skate you should be happy, if your not then you’re just skating because you think its cool and no one should skate because of that and if your happy the music your listening to should make you happy or at least not mad. Most people, when they skate, listen to reggae, alt. rock, punk, rap, and rock. Because all of these genres have some reflection on being happy OR are fast paced and are almost like adrenaline to get you to land your next trick. If your listening to heavy metal you are most likely to get mad and throw your board and eventually break it, probably not the best choice of music. Either way listen to the music that inspires you to have fun when you skate.

Most of the time when people skate they wear pants because they help protect your legs from bruises when they board pops up and hits them, I’m not saying you can’t skate in shorts im just saying pants are more preferred. Also when your skating in the sun during the day and you fall on the hot pavement, your legs wont burn up on the asphalt. When you skate how your pants fit is one the most important things because you want to be comfortable. Pants are the same as most things in life, you get what you pay for. With that being said let me tell you what you should look for. If your pants cover your entire shoe, weigh 20 pounds and can be bought at hot topic, they probably aren’t the best pants for skating. If your pants are so tight that when ever you walk you can feel the skin getting rubbed of your legs, those probably aren’t the right pants for skating. You want pants that are loose but not to loose that they will be annoying. If they are too short then when your legs are bent you will be able to see your ankles and those probably hurt the most when they get hit with the board. You want them to be about 3” longer than where they would be if you were wearing them and they were even with your shoe. You also want them to be durable. If you buy really thin pants they will be comfortable but you’ll rip them the first time you fall. Try to stick to denim and cords. Some good brands are levi’s, faded glory, and krew. Krew pants are much more expensive but fit better and will last longer.

There are many shoe brands out now and more are coming out constantly trying to improve on what other companies are doing. When buying shoes try to get a pair that are cheap, comfortable and will last a long time, if you buy a pair of vans slip ons then they are cheap but not comfortable or durable. You want shoes that have padded souls leather or suede around the toe and are “poofy”. Nikes new SB shoes are great for skating, they are super comfortable and last a long time but run around $80, too much for most skaters. Lately Vans has been coming out with some new shoes that are pretty comfortable and durable and still are pretty cheap. Some shoes that I do not recommend are Fallens I had a pair and they lasted about a week, weren’t comfortable, and were $70. However, some of the best shoes I’ve skated in are Circas. They are as comfortable as Nikes and very durable. They cost around $65 and its defiantly worth it. Another great brand is Lakai, they are just like circas but cost almost as much as Nikes and are overall great shoes to skate in. In the end just buy shoes that you can skate well in and can afford, that’s all that matters. Board Brands / Best Boards Almost everyone that has started skating in the last 2 years has had one. The pink or purple Bam pro model, black and pink Bam trucks and Pink Bam wheels. Kids are buying one of the worst set ups if this is what they’re buying. Overall Elements boards are horrible, they warp and break extremely easily. I don’t know about the heliums though because I don’t trust Element enough to buy a $60 board plus grip. You want to start off with a blank, a shop board, or a board that you know will last long if you are sure your going to stay into skating. You are going to want to start off with a mini or a micro if you are 3 to 7 years old. After that you can pretty much get any board in a skate shop because they are all about the same length. You defiantly want to make sure you are getting a board that’s the right width though. I would defiantly recommend a 7.5” board for anyone that is starting to skate because they are lighter and easier to flip. Some good boards are Krookeds, reals, anti-heros, bakers, enjois, and girls. Any of these would make a great board for a first time skater.

There are many reasons that people skate. One of them is the fact that you can get such a sense of accomplishment from basically a piece of wood, wheels and a turning system. Also its fun, skating at skate parks and street spots with friends for hours on end will keep any true skater happy. The actual feeling of skating, rolling down the sidewalk, and hearing the wheels roll over the cracks or rolling away clean after doing a backside flip down an 8 stair. However there are people that don’t skate for these reasons. For example if you go to a skate park half the kids you’ll see are there with $250 worth of clothes and a $200 board and also don’t know how to ollie. These are the kids that see other skaters and think they look cool and have lots of friends because they skate. They have their parents go out and buy them a pair of $70 pants because they think people with think they’re cool. Well just because you wear skate clothes doesn’t make you cool. You can where a shirt with big bird on it and a pair of Levi’s and if you skate good you’ll have friends that skate too. That’s the nice thing about skating, nobody cares what you look like or how old you are, you’re only judged on how good you skate.
